( A Response to the TRC Legacy Section)
This reading acts as a powerful reminder of how far the impacts of residential school spread. It was not only the First Peoples who faced the harsh realities of residential school who were let down by the Canadian government. It was their communities, their families, their children, and their cultures.
What’s more is that the closure of these schools has not ended their impacts. Today we continue to see families broken, and unfairly equipped or enabled to successfully participate in many aspects of Canadian society. We see these lasting impacts today in the disproportionate number of First Peoples involved in the foster care system, justice system, and post-secondary educational facilities.
As such, the need for continued improvement and healing on behalf of all parties is crucial. We need to create open and safe spaces to speak about these topics and help each other through this.
